For 18 years, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM) has awarded scholarships to small-scale Delmarva farmers to attend farming conferences focused on sustainable and regenerative practices including the following: Future Harvest Annual Conference, Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention, and Pasa Sustainable Agriculture Conference.
This year, the HLFM awarded eight total farmer scholarships. Scholarships from the regular scholarship fund went to Zach Dittmar of Dittmar Family Farms, Felton, DE to attend the Future Harvest Annual Conference, Jay McCutcheon of Weathered Eye Farm, Lewes, DE to attend the Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention; Josh Nash of Nash Veggies, Lincoln, DE to attend the Pasa Sustainable Agriculture Conference; and Travis and Stephanie Reid of Reid Angus, Frankford, DE to attend the National Angus Convention.
In 2016, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market established an emerging women farmers’ scholarship fund in memory of Delaware farmer Debra L. Schaefer. This year, four farmers received a Debra L. Schaefer Scholarship for Emerging Women Farmers: Alison Taylor and Kay Carney of Weathered Eye Farm, Lewes, DE will attend the Women in Agriculture Regional Conference; Jenny Dittmar of Dittmar Family Farms, Felton, DE will attend the Future Harvest Annual Conference; and Andrea Davis-Cetina of Quarter Acre Farm, Greensboro, MD will attend the Pasa Sustainable Agriculture Conference.
Consistent with its mission, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market is committed to supporting local farmers who grow fruits, vegetables, and other foods. These scholarships help small Delmarva farmers become better educated about sustainable and regenerative farming practices.
